Drugs
have been employed as tools for achieving endless motives,
including health, relief of pain, mystical revelations,
relaxation, self-understanding etc. However, the drug
development process involves millions of dollars and carried
out by a team of experts who are well versed in their
respective areas. Unfortunately, the pharmaceutical industries have
so far failed to evolve a comprehensive plan to establish
R & D in Pakistan. The absence of R & D has affected
the growth of quality drugs in this region immensely. In order to
keep pace with global developments in the field of medicine,
Efroze has taken a bold step in establishing a Research
and Development unit with the following main objectives:
- To provide a model set-up for R & D in Pakistan
- To develop effective and less time-consuming methods
of analyzing the existing range of products and to
develop methods for new locally developed products.
- To conduct pharmacokinetics and bioavailability
studies on locally developed products.
- To investigate physiochemical characteristics of
drug substances as a pre-requisite to formulation
and design of new products.
- To conduct drug stability studies under the prevailing
climatic condition in Pakistan and also with respect
to local packaging material.
- To conduct drug metabolic study in specific areas
such as acute chronic renal failure.
- To isolate, purify and characterize endogenous
inhibitors.
Efroze is determined to achieve these objectives and
with this view Efroze is coordinating with various
institutions, such as Aga Khan University, PCSIR, Karachi University
and JPMC. We are confident that the expertise of these
institutions will
help us to accomplish our objectives. Dr M. A. Salam Khan
and Mr Obaid Ali - a B.Sc. & M. Phil from the
University of Karachi - are looking after the Research
& Development Laboratories. |
