Seminar on Need to Educate Women on Dysmenorrhea at PMA House |
The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Pakistan organized an informative seminar on 16th December 2009 at the PMA House in regard to the management of painful periods or Dysmenorrhea, a problem persisting in nearly 90% of the women around the world. The program was attended by Mr. Muhammad Abdullah Feroz, Managing Director Efroze Chemical Industries (Pvt.) Ltd. and Efroze Marketing team.
Dr. Sher Shah Syed, President of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Pakistan, emphasized on the need to educate young girls and women on the subject and provide them with authentic information regarding painful periods and its proper treatment. He stressed that the particular issue needs to be addressed strongly since Primary Dysmenorrhea consequently affects not only the quality of a woman’s life but also the economy of a society as a whole.
Dr. Nusrat Shah, Gynaecologist practicing in Civil Hospital Karachi explained that Primary Dysmenorrhea is the natural pain and discomfort a woman goes through during her monthly cycle whereas Secondary Dysmenorrhea may have pathological reasons behind the pain. She gave some tips on how to manage painful periods through healthy diet, regular exercise and proper medication whereas Dr. Haleema Yasmin from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre spoke on the psychological disturbances in females related to menstruation.
During the session, various myths and misconceptions related to menstrual pain and symptoms were discussed especially about the use of painkillers. Dr. Shahnaz Hussaini and Mr. Khaliq-ur-Rehman, GM Marketing & Sales, ECI also addressed the subject.
